Tradition as Foundation of Sporting Success
Austria is rich in tradition as host of international rowing regattas.
It has been nearly 30 years since the first Nation’s Cup was held in Linz-Ottensheim in 1990. Since then the Upper Austrian Rowing Federation has proven its competencies in the implementation of several World Rowing regattas. I consider the attribution of a top-level event like the 2019 World Rowing Championships to the regatta venue Linz-Ottensheim as an important sign and proof of quality.
Within the previous decades, Austria’s athletes have achieved several successes in competition alongside big rowing nations. Nine red-white-red gold medals have been won in World Rowing Championships. Also recently, Austria has celebrated great rowing successes, speaking about Magdalena Lobnig’s bronze medal in the women’s single sculls at the 2017 World Rowing Championships in Sarasota-Bradenton, USA, and two medals in the men’s four and men’s lightweight quadruple sculls at the 2017 World Rowing U23 Championships in Plovdiv, BUL. National successes evoked media response and raise interest among a broader audience. However, the list of top athletes is long and the best may win in the end. Thus, we can look forward to thrilling competitions in 2019.
I would like to express my gratitude to all the sponsors and volunteers that have created the operational and infrastructural foundations for a sports competition of this dimension – and especially to the Organising Committee. I keep my fingers crossed for all of our athletes and I am absolutely positive that we will experience brilliant competitions as well as that Upper Austria will leave an impression as host of mass sport events.
To all rowing fans in Austria and abroad I wish exciting days favoured by nice weather conditions in Linz-Ottensheim.
Heinz-Christian Strache, Vice-Chancellor of Austria and Minister of Sports
Welcome to the Sport Scene of Upper Austria
Being host of the 2019 World Rowing Championships is a special award for Upper Austria.
Events of this size are not only from sporting importance, but they are also a highlight for the Upper Austrian tourism and economy. Their economic impact and the advertising value for our region is huge. With the new National Training Centre for Rowing and Canoeing in Linz-Ottensheim we have created the corresponding environment for top results. I would like to thank everybody who is engaged in the World Rowing Championships. To the athletes I wish a lot of success.
Markus Achleitner, Minister of Economy and Sports, Upper Austria
